Slavic Marriage Custom

The most important celebration in a Slavic community is the bride meeting, which is generally celebrated in flower, summer or fall. It was a time for celebration and delight, as it marked the beginning of the new lifestyle. Military belarus brides married after successful efforts, sailors held their ceremonies after a good catch and shepherds tied the knot after the birthing winter.

Before the wedding ceremony, the wedding is usually given a rushnyk ( a wreath with a cross). Her relatives manifest her with bread and salt and beg for their grace. They also give the couple ektenias ( a ring ) that symbolizes a slavic marriage and a promise of faithfulness and fidelity. The wife wears a veil, which she never takes off, except to go to the washroom. It was considered a bad sign to taking off the mask during the service, and in old times it was typical to punish a newlywed who did so.

After the ceremony the brides walk through the streets of the town, with persons throwing seeds of rice, chocolates and cash for happiness and prosperity. They even quit at regional monuments and give tribute. The wedding ceremony is supervised by a master of ceremonies called a” Tamada”. He is a raucous buddy who runs the different events.

When the wife leaves her parents ‘ residence, she takes with her a jacket that she should stay, not to give away or letting people touch. The vicar’s family tested the bride by asking her questions and requesting waters from her. If they placed income on a holder, the bride may offer them water or answers their concerns.
